Wedding Invitation Timeline: When to Start, Mail, and Set Your RSVP Date

Your wedding invitations give guests the details they need to make plans and their first glimpse of your celebration. Starting early gives you time to enjoy the design process and review everything before printing.
Here’s a wedding invitation timeline, from your first appointment to your RSVP deadline.
6 to 8 months before: Start the invitation process
Gather inspiration and book your invitation appointment. Think about your wedding style, color palette, approximate invitation quantity, and the pieces you’d like to include. Your suite might include a details card, response card, envelope liner, or other finishing touches.
You don’t need to have every decision made before your appointment. This is your chance to explore papers, printing methods, and designs that fit your vision and budget.
4 to 6 months before: Approve proofs and go to print
Review your final proofs carefully. Check names, dates, times, addresses, website details, and RSVP instructions. If you’re having your guest addresses printed, you’ll also need to submit your completed guest list before your order goes to print.
At Violet Invitations, we schedule printing after we receive your final proof approval, guest list, and remaining payment. Once your invitations are finished, keep them safely stored until it’s time to mail them.
Planning a destination wedding? Aim to approve your proofs and go to print toward the earlier end of this window, or sooner if needed, so your invitations are ready for your earlier mailing date.
5 to 6 months before: Mail destination wedding invitations
If you’re planning a destination wedding or many guests will need to arrange travel, consider mailing your invitations five to six months before the wedding. That extra time helps guests make travel and accommodation plans.
About 3 months before: Mail most wedding invitations
For most weddings, we recommend mailing invitations about three months before the wedding. This gives guests time to plan and respond.
Before mailing, take a fully assembled invitation to the post office to confirm the postage. Paper weight, extra cards, ribbon, wax seals, and envelope size can all affect the amount needed.
4 to 5 weeks before: Set your RSVP deadline
An RSVP deadline four to five weeks before the wedding is a useful starting point. It gives you time to follow up with guests who haven’t responded and prepare your seating arrangements.
Before printing your response cards, ask your venue or caterer when they need your final guest count. Set your RSVP deadline early enough to collect responses and meet that date.
